Two solo trans Atlantic sailings.

Carole was born in Seattle where her father was with Boeing during the war.  Family was originally from Montana where her Dad took her duck hunting and fishing at an early age.  Her great grand father had homesteaded there and another side of the family had been Mormon Pioneers.  After the war she attended school on the south side of Chicago where her father was employed by the Chicago Bridge And Iron Co. and later in Pittsburgh through junior and senior high school.  In school she remembers dancing as a sugar plum fairy in the Nutcracker and was a cheer
leader in a special school where she took four years of Latin and advanced college prep courses.  Graduated in 1962 after designing the Year Book.   Chose the University of Wisconsin after seeing it was described by Time as among the top ten schools for both "fun" and "academics".  Her major was in art/ graphic design.  The summer before graduating she worked in geophysics and polar research. Married Kim Wade on the day they graduated.
She started her first business designing and merchandizing customized Christmas cards during the summers of her Sophomore and Junior years.   Some time after that she and her husband  worked at Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone.
Several years later she was living in Hartford, running her own graphic design business  with customers like Aetna, Signa,  Pratt/Whitney, Otis Elevator, etc. when a boy friend introduced her to sailing out of Mystic, Ct.  When they  split up she got her own 30 foot ketch on which she spent weekends at Mystic and 14 hours days at Hartford until she sold her home and possessions in Hartford and moved to full time living in the sail boat.
Early on she sailed down to the Bahamas where she found congenial families and individuals who lived full time on their boats, congregated on one of the smaller islands in the Exumas. Her first ocean transit was by way of Bermuda to the Azores with a delay in route while she flew back to New york for the marriage of her daughter.  Before reaching the Azores she came across a small de-masted  sailboat on which was a dead young man.  She towed the boat into the Azores, and after announcing her coming,  a police boat came out to meet her and arrested her until her story was verified.  The young man had been missing for two months.
On her second transit she wound up in the Canary Islands where she stayed for four months and started her painting career, eventually sailing up past Spain and Portugal with a friend on another boat up though the Irish Sea to Northumberland (?) in England.
She settled in Park City in 2002, loves skiing, painting, and plays excellent  duplicate bridge.
A wonderful variance on "Voices of Park City".=
